Tej Maini, M.D., Founder & President

Tej MainiTej Maini, M.D., F.A.C.S., the founder and president of Maini Consulting Group, is a global health care authority with proven strategic and operations expertise as an international hospital CEO and board member, and medical school dean of international affairs. He has led international expansion ventures, hospital start-ups and turnarounds, and global medical education partnerships. His expertise spans the Middle East, Europe, the former Soviet bloc, Africa, India, East Asia and Australasia.

As a consultant, Dr. Maini has advised several major health care organizations on international start-up ventures. He helped Cleveland Clinic develop its international expansion strategy, evaluate opportunities in several countries, then develop plans and recruit the leadership team for a new $4 billion, world-class hospital in Abu Dhabi.

As a health care system CEO and board chairman for more than two decades in the U.S. and abroad, he won widespread recognition for care quality and patient safety transformations, financial turnarounds, metrics-driven performance initiatives, technology innovation and leadership on health policy initiatives.

A physician executive, Dr. Maini previously served as CEO and board chairman of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the top-rated government-owned hospital system in Abu Dhabi, under Cleveland Clinic management. Earlier, he served as president and CEO of the Worcester, Massachusetts-based Fallon Clinic multi-specialty group practice. He also has held clinical leadership roles as medical director and surgery department chair.

Bringing his international health care expertise to medical education, Dr. Maini served as Dean of International Affairs at Boston-based Tufts University School of Medicine, where he expanded the school’s global presence by partnering with emerging-market government health agencies and educational institutions to bring international medical graduates and students to Tufts’ teaching hospital affiliates for residency, fellowship, research and other training programs, generating increased revenue for the school. He also led initiatives to counsel and prepare international candidates to win U.S. placements, including CV development, interview coaching and orientation to the U.S. medical system.

As a consultant, he developed a proposal for a medical executive education program in Cairo for the World Health Organization (WHO). He also is a Visiting Scholar for health issues at the Heller School of Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA.

In becoming a top-rated, board certified vascular surgeon, Dr. Maini earned his medical degree in his native India, and served his residency and surgical fellowships at three of Boston’s top academic hospitals.

Larissa J. Lucas, M.D.

Larissa Lucas, M.D., F.A.C.P., a Maini Consulting Group consultant, is a physician executive with a decade’s worth of experience as a strategic health care change management leader in both business and clinical settings. She offers deep knowledge of evidence-based medical practice innovation, and a strong track record in metrics-driven quality, performance and workflow design initiatives. Her expertise is particularly suited to projects at the intersection of new technology and health care operations.

Dr. Lucas has leveraged metrics-based quality and performance improvement initiatives, as well as workflow design and organizational management expertise, both to drive major growth as a content strategy executive and editor for a leading commercial online point-of-care medical research provider, and to improve evidence-based medical practice, care quality and efficiency as a medical director of clinical group practices in the Boston area. She serves as Medical Director and continues to practice as a palliative care physician at a Greater Boston hospice.

Douglas Curran

Mr. Curran brings decades of communications experience as a business and personal public relations consultancy owner, journalist and communications executive. He has developed the International Affairs web site, blog and other communications for Tufts University School of Medicine, and provided corporate communications strategy, media and community relations, crisis and issues management, and image-building communications for businesses and professional organizations. He has developed CVs and personal marketing materials for hundreds of professionals and top executives.

A.K. Nandakumar, Ph.D.

Nanda NandakumarNanda Nandakumar, Ph.D., a Maini Consulting Group adviser, is an internationally recognized expert in health care financing, insurance models and efficiency in spending. He also currently is Professor of the Practice at Brandeis University, where he co-chairs the Ph.D. concentration in Global Health and Development, and serves as Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development at the university’s Schneider Institutes for Health Policy.

Dr. Nandakumar brings to his advisory role 20 years of technical and managerial experience; and has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has worked in the United States, Bangladesh, India, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Kenya, Rwanda, Mongolia, Sudan, Western Samoa and Tonga.

Randi S. Nichols

Most recently, in a combined role as Chief Human Resources Officer and Operations Support Services leader for Reliant Medical Group in Massachusetts, Ms. Nichols led group practice remodeling, international physician integration, performance-based compensation and benefits redesign, a 20-site primary care “lean” transformation, and a major physician training program to upgrade patient service. She previous headed HR on an international scale for two global technology companies.

Genevieve Bautista

Genevieve BautistaGenevieve Bautista, a Maini Consulting Group adviser, is an operations and project management leader who has more than a decade of experience directing complex operations and major initiatives at two of the world’s leading health care organizations, Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, including a key role in driving the success of an international hospital start-up in Abu Dhabi.

In the Middle East project, Ms. Bautista helped establish ground operations, created a program  management office that saved $3.5 million in consulting fees, and implemented program management methodology across 12 project work streams. She led teams that developed departmental strategies, operating models, policies and procedures, workflows and staffing plans to enable the delivery of an unprecedented level of health care in the new facility. She currently also serves as Section Head of Revenue Cycle Systems and Project Management for the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ.
